The Pressures of No/Low Tox….

You know this whole low tox movement is carrying a lot of weight these days. While the idea behind it is honorable, gee it’s putting a lot of pressure on the young mums of today. While I absolutely believe and agree with low tox, the reality is we are never going to be NO tox, I don’t care what anyone says. There are chemicals in the very air we breathe that we cannot see, car fumes, factory fumes, chemtrails, plastics in our foods, the clothes we wear, it’s everywhere! I think what we should be really looking at is what we put on our skin first and foremost and then gradually replace things in the home. I don’t think it’s feasible or wise to all of a sudden bundle everything up in your house that has a chemical in it and throw it in the bin, that crap costs money, so do thing gradually, as you run out of something replace it then.

In my house I use Doterra products for a lot of things, I use their surface cleaner that is a surfectant not a disinfectant, which means it cleanses the surface but doesn’t kill bacteria etc. I use a natural dishwashing liquid and scourer, I don’t use candles, or air fresheners, I don’t use room deodorizers, I don’t use chemicals on the floor I use essential oils and a steam mop, so while my house is not a low tox zone I certainly reduce the use where possible. A lot of chemical will cause issues with women the older we get, chemicals disrupt the endochrine system throwing our hormones well out of balance and our state of mind in complete disarray. Now monthly cycles are hard enough without having to deal with this crap too. Menopause is a bloody nightmare but with a system loaded with chemicals you are making crap worse for yourself. I have managed to escape hormone replacement therapy out of sheer determination not to put those types of chemicals in my body mainly because, while they are known to help with menopause issues, they can cause other problems later on, which I am not a fan of. Control your state of mind and you have won half the battle, not saying this is easy, but it is certainly possible. Essential oils played a big part in my menopause journey.

Perfumes are an absolute no no, not only are you spraying these highly toxic chemicals on to your skin you are breathing them in as well. Burning candles and plug in room deodorizers are full of commonly emitted VOCs (volatile organic compounds) related to the scent in candles include formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, limonene, alcohol and esters. These harmful chemicals can cause health problems ranging from headaches, dizziness and allergy symptoms to asthma attacks, respiratory tract infections and even cancer. Yeah that’s a fat NO from me just to have the room smell pretty. Get some essential oils and a diffuser for a better smell and no toxic chemicals pumped into the atmosphere around you. They should be the first things that you ditch and switch.

I guess the point I am trying to make is, while it is critically important to be aware of the chemicals we are putting in not only our bodies but our environments, it is just as ciritically important not to scold others who aren’t as forward in their low tox journey as you might think they should be. Being a mother is hard enough without the pressures of how that should look. So do what you can, take the pressure off yourselves and you will feel better about the journey to LOW tox, remember no one will ever be NO tox.
